Stephen Johnson was born in Tampa Florida March 8th 1952. He received a BFA from The University of South Florida in 1975. Stephen started his art education as a printmaker but quickly discovered photography. From 1976 to 1991, Stephen pursued a career in photography (mostly stock photography of nature and travel subjects) while practicing fine art and experimental photography as a creative outlet.

In 1992, Stephen found himself missing the tactile qualities of painting, drawing and printing on various surfaces. This led him to start his mixed media work, which continues to present. Around the same time, Steve bought his first Macintosh computer and set about teaching himself the various graphics and art software.

Steve was already working with water based media, photosilkscreen processes and drawing. Soon he was able to add computer-manipulated imagery to the mix in his works via printed paper and heat transfers applied directly to canvas and paper.

In retrospect, Stephen’s influences are many. He includes among them the Dadaists, Surrealists, Pop artists from the mid-sixties New York school and the art of the 1980's New York school. Steve also includes dreams, altered states of consciousness, the seaming chaos of nature and the "cold order" of technology as major influences in his work. He is collected all over the United States and Europe and has won many awards for his unique and interesting work. Stephen currently lives and works in the city of Bonita Springs.
